Over the last twelve months, the staff and pupils of Waterloo Lodge School have raised an amazing £1600.00 for Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley.
Cake sales, odd sock day, Genes for Jeans, World Book Day and an amazing Open Day have all contributed to our commitment to support Derian House Children’s Hospice in their 30th anniversary year.
By far the most challenging and inspiring task was when the Head Teacher, Helen Rigby, tasked the Form Teachers with an enterprise challenge for their Summer Term 1 enrichment. Her challenge was an Enterprise scheme where each Form group was given £25.00 and had to create and design a profitable business. The £25.00 had to be paid back at the end of the challenge and any profits made would be donated to our chosen charity; Derian House.
Pupils and their Form Teachers came up with various ideas of how to make as much money as possible; we had Waterloo Lodge’s very own “Dragon’s Den”. One Form group developed and designed their own hot drinks stall, offering coffee, biscuits, tea, and hot chocolate. The Form group sold to businesses in the local community. With the kind support of Astley Park, the pupils set up a stall, selling their wares to members of the public, who were enjoying an afternoon stroll. They raised over £55.
Another Form decided to organise a raffle to win a Spring hamper. The group decided what items to put in the hamper. These all related to Spring, including gardening bulbs, garden seeds, candles, sweets and chocolate. The pupils then sold raffle tickets and also devised a lucky dip prize for when they visited OFG schools and a local mainstream School. They managed to raise and amazing £225!
One Form came up with the idea of selling mocktails. They created a variety of different flavours. Through their own market research to decide on which flavours to create they agreed on Strawberry and Lemon and Lime. Various summer designs for the mocktail stand were created and a flyer, which was sent around to businesses to pre-order the drinks for delivery.
The pupils visited our Central Office in Bolton. They set up the stand and sold drinks to the staff working there. Many thanks to all the staff at Central Office, they managed to raise £80 on the day, which was incredible. Their next visit was to Ashley Park to sell to members of the public who placed lots of orders with the pupils. Overall, they raised over £120.00.
Another Form group decided they were going to create a car wash business. The pupils started out by making a list of equipment they would need. They then created their own banners and posters and sent emails to schools and Hotels in the local area, offering their services. They charged £5 per car wash. The Form group washed over 30 cars. Car washing took place at Kilhey Court Hotel, Oakfield School, The Holden School, and here at Waterloo Lodge School they washed visitor’s cars who attended our Open Day. Throughout the enterprise enrichment pupils were polite, communicative, and worked well both individually and as a team. They raised £115 in total.
When we agreed as a school to raise funds for Derian House Children’s Hospice I made a pledge to raise a £1000.00. We were all incredibly amazed when the final total came in at £1600.00.
